There are a lot of different views on this topic as to whether money gives happiness or not. Everyone has his/her own views which in my opinion emerges out of personal experience and understanding.
Some of the views that one usually comes across are:
1) I need money, I know I'll be more happy with it
2) Money gives you happiness
3) You can buy everything but not happiness
and of course, Money makes the mare go.
I just thought that I should write here about how I think on this topic. You can read if you are interested.
In one sentece it is: Money is a necessity and gives you comfort too, and comfort is not happiness.
Here is how I came to this conclusion:
- I have come across people in my life who have money and are happy.
- I have come across people in my life who have money are are not happy.
- I have come across people in my life who have limited money and are happy.
- I have come across people in my life who have limited money are not happy.
- I have never come across anyone with no money and happy.
To me, the basic purpose of money is to fulfil your basic needs and after this privide you with comfort. Comfort can be viewed physically in the form of beautiful homes, good cars, luxurious living conditions, international traveling (yes, i know you are thinking that its happiness, i disagree).
Think a little deep here!!
The reason why I call all this as comfort and not happiness is because of a situation like this:
Lets suppose I am rich, like filthy rich. I have all the luxurious things that I can think of. Now, I love travelling, and my dream travelling is to travel to space (wohoooooo). I contact some agency and I have a ticket to travel to space. I feel happy, yes I think that I feel happy; confusing myself because its actually one more comfort/luxury that I am able to buy with my money. Now, on the day I will travel, my personal doctor tells me that I can not travel to space because I am not fit for it; and never will be. Now, where does this particular happiness go? It will vaish. My money and my happiness break apart.
I think happiness comes to you from inner self, and the people around you. Money is a necessity, but once you reach a level where your basic needs are satisfied, it provides you comfort and not happiness.

here's the thing if you have to be in this society that we have created for ourself, good or bad. Then you need money. Money should be a need not a want there's a difference. You don't need the chocolate sunday you just want it.
One can only be happy without money if you get out of this society. Somewhere where it doesn't actually matter. But if you don't have money in this society then you will be struggling to survive all the things from happiness to spirituality come later.
See, I am not against money. I would still like to travel to space :P
The opinion that I am trying to express here is that Happiness does not come out of Money.
Nice selection of topic bro :)
I am of the point that it depends on what you WISH for!
If you need money to fulfill your wish then having money would definitely makes you happy. On the other hand, you might wish for something that comes without money :)
@Shah: meri kahani ka koi asar nahi hua tujh per :P
...and the people around you?
If you don't have money...no one is happy with you!! Simply; being happy is a state...state of mind...
Money definitely doesn't buy happiness, but somehow it's easier to cry your tears in your Ferrari then it is on a bicycle ;)
Fazool mein itne simple topic ko complicate kar rah hai!
What is the point you want to make here? Is it that by challenging the idea of “Live for Money”, you want to debate on, from where happiness and satisfaction comes?
happinessAndSatisfaction = GetHapinessAndSatisfaction(parm1, parm2, …, parm n);
Are you trying to debate on what are the parameters of the above function or else if this is not the case than I will fully agree with Zeeshan Sohail.
What's wrong with all you guys?
Where did I say that money is bad? I would also like to cry in a Ferrari rather than on a bicycle (especially when I can't even ride it :S :( )
The point I am making here is that Money is linked with comfort rather than happiness.
@Hasan: Who are you, I mean there are many Hasans out there, which one is you? and whats your point? and what are these parameters for? :S
It was HJ. Now again read my comments, given above. Do you want to discuss the things that bring happiness and satisfaction to the life and what amount of role money plays? [Actually I have taken it other way round, have I understood it right or wrong?]
HJ
I want to understand what Faheem Akhtar has tried to explain in his last para, it sounds something deep.
HJ
Oh mera pyara sa HJ :)
Yeah, if you want you can discuss 'the things that bring happiness and satisfaction to the life and what amount of role money plays?'
